Pre-Op INSTRUCTIONS

PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CATARACT EYE SURGERY

PREPARATION FOR CATARACT SURGERY:

Five days prior to cataract surgery, start a regimen of warm compresses to your eyelids in the morning and evening using a wash cloth held to the eyes for 5 minutes.  Follow this by cleaning the eyelids and the eyelid margins with Ocusoft lid scrubs or diluted baby shampoo on a cotton swab or Q-tip.

MEDICATIONS BEFORE SURGERY:

If you have been prescribed oral medications by your primary care doctor, take them at the correct time with only water before your surgery. It is especially important to take high blood pressure medication, if prescribed. If you are diabetic, we will schedule your surgery accordingly so you can eat and not disrupt your medication routine.

MEDICATIONS FOR CATARACT SURGERY:

If Dr. Ringeman has sent a prescription for an eye drop to start prior to surgery, you will be given specific instructions at your pre-surgery appointment regarding when to start this. Use your pre-surgery eye drop in the operative eye only.  Take any other prescribed eye drops on your typical schedule, unless otherwise advised.

INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING FOOD/MEALS PRIOR TO SURGERY:

Do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight in preparation for your cataract surgery.  Also, do not eat on the morning of your cataract surgery prior to coming to the surgery center.

ASPIRING, COUMADIN, BLOOD-THINNERS (as applicable):

For standard cataract surgery, it generally is not necessary to stop taking aspirin or other blood-thinners.

MAKEUP:

Do not use any eye or facial make up for 24 hours prior to your the surgery. Thoroughly wash off any facial creams and makeup before coming in for the procedure. Remove makeup from eyelids and lashes.

CLOTHING:

Please wear two-piece, loose fitting clothing (i.e., button down the front blouse or shirt and slacks) on the day of surgery.  No make-up, face cream or body lotions please.

VALUABLES:

Please leave any money, jewelry, and other valuables at home.

TRANSPORTATION:

IMPORTANT!! You must have a responsible adult take you home after surgery because of the effects of post-surgery anesthesia. We recommend that you do not drive a car for 24 hours after surgery.  Also, you should not drive with an eye patch.  Expect to be at the surgery center for 2-3 hours.

AFTER SURGERY:

We are planning to see you within 24 hours after your surgery, usually first thing the morning following your surgery.  Please follow your post op instruction sheet, which will be given to you immediately following your surgery in the recovery area and reviewed with you by Dr. Ringeman.  Please do not hesitate to call our office immediately with any questions, concerns about your vision, eye pain, or anything that seems abnormal about your post operative course.  There is an after hours service that will connect your call if necessary.  Our number is: (336) 842-5477.
